French group Tellos is preparing an AI data center in Fruges, in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France. Reported by La Voix du Nord, it is one of the largest projects announced in the region. The president of the local Haut-Pays intercommunality, Philippe Ducrocq, has welcomed it.
DOES YOUR SITUATION LOOK LIKE ONE OF THESE?
1. WHAT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED
An investment estimated at €2 to 4 billion
Construction announced for 2028 to 2030
200 to 250 jobs in a first phase, according to local officials
A site along the D928 road, opposite the Petite Dîmerie business zone
Local officials highlight three assets: available land, an extra-high-voltage line coming from Gravelines, and significant wind generation in the area.
Tellos is a family-owned group from Alsace specialising in networks: heating and cooling, electricity, telecoms, public lighting, land development. A project of this size marks a move towards digital infrastructure.
2. THE STEPS THAT WILL SET THE REAL TIMELINE
Grid connection. 900 MW means a connection to RTE's transmission grid: a request, a study, a technical and financial offer, then works. Hauts-de-France already had around 6 GW of signed data center connection requests in May 2026. The project's place in that queue, and the capacity actually available at nearby substations, will set the timeline far more than the construction dates.
A line is not capacity. An extra-high-voltage line nearby is an asset, but it does not mean the power is available. It takes a connection substation, RTE works, and capacity not already allocated to other projects.
Wind and continuity. A data center runs around the clock. Local wind generation can support a power purchase agreement or a low-carbon claim, but security of supply relies on the grid.
Phasing. Large projects often start with a first phase, sometimes on the distribution grid, as in Cambrai. How much power will be available for that first phase, and when, will be decisive.
Permits and local context. Building permit, classified installation rules for backup generators, water, public consultation: in a rural area, how the project is explained to residents will matter as much as the files. See data center water use in France.
3. WHAT TO WATCH
Intercommunality decisions on the land
The building permit and any environmental procedures
The opening of a public consultation
The partners: operator, customers, financiers
A 900 MW project can transform an area. It will first have to go through these steps, and their pace will decide when the first megawatt goes live. See also our site tracker for investors.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who is behind the Fruges data center project?
French group Tellos, a family-owned network infrastructure group from Alsace, according to La Voix du Nord.
What capacity has been announced in Fruges?
900 MW, for an investment estimated at €2 to 4 billion, with construction announced for 2028 to 2030.
What will set the timeline?
Mainly the connection to RTE's grid: the request, the capacity available at nearby substations and the works required, in a region that already has many data center requests.
