This tracker is updated monthly with lead time data gathered through direct contact with European transformer manufacturers, procurement teams and industry sources. It is the only consolidated source of this data available in English.

CURRENT LEAD TIMES — MAY 2025

Large Power Transformers (100 MVA+) ABB (CH/DE): 52–60 months · Siemens Energy (DE): 48–56 months
Hitachi Energy (SE): 50–58 months · GE Vernova (FR): 44–52 months
Medium Power Transformers (10–100 MVA) Pauwels (BE): 24–32 months · TMC Transformers (IT): 20–28 months
Efacec (PT): 22–30 months · Schneider Electric (FR): 18–26 months
Distribution Transformers (under 10 MVA) Generally 8–16 months across European manufacturers
Note: data center applications typically require 10 MVA+

WHY THESE NUMBERS MATTER

A data center project requiring a 50 MVA transformer ordered today in Europe should expect delivery no earlier than Q1 2027 for medium-tier manufacturers and Q1 2028 for major OEMs. Any project announcement without a confirmed transformer order is, at this point, a press release without a delivery date.

KEY TRENDS THIS MONTH

Medium-tier European manufacturers are the best bet

Companies like Pauwels (Belgium), TMC (Italy) and Efacec (Portugal) operate on lead times roughly half those of the major OEMs. For data center projects targeting 2026–2027 commissioning, these manufacturers represent the most realistic path to on-time delivery.

Second-hand market is tightening

Used HV transformers from decommissioned cement plants, steel mills and paper factories are being absorbed faster than new units are entering the market. Prices for tested, certified used units have risen 40–60% since 2023.

US buyers are looking to Europe

Enquiries from North American data center developers to European manufacturers have increased significantly in Q1 2025. The ANSI-to-IEC conversion requirement remains a barrier but is increasingly viewed as worth the complexity given US lead times of 5+ years.

HISTORICAL COMPARISON
