A data center project involves several types of firms, usually complementary. The right choice depends on your stage and your question: finding land, securing power, design, construction, financing, operations.
1. TYPES OF FIRMS
Engineering and design firms design the facility and often supervise the works. Large engineering groups cover the whole cycle on large projects. Consulting and owner's representative firms work for the owner: they define the need, prepare decisions, select and steer the other parties and check what they deliver. Real estate advisers find sites and capacity and support transactions. Energy consultants cover efficiency and compliance. Lawyers cover planning, environment, contracts and disputes.
2. WHICH FIRM FOR WHICH NEED
| Your need | Consult first |
|---|---|
| Can this land host a data center, with how much power? | Consulting firm specialised in grid connection, with an HV expert |
| Check a site's announced power before buying or financing | An advisor independent from the seller, on documents |
| Define the brief and select the design team | Consulting and owner's representative firm |
| Design and supervise the works | Engineering firm or group |
| Steer the project end to end for the owner | Owner's representative, alongside the design team |
| Find capacity to lease or a site to buy | Real estate adviser |
| Planning, contracts, appeals | Lawyer |
3. QUESTIONS TO ASK
Who will actually do the work, with what verifiable background?
What do you know about grid connection, which often sets a French project's real date?
Which deliverable, by when, at what written price?
Do you also work for the other side on the same project?
Which comparable references can you describe, even anonymised?
Is your commitment best-efforts or results-based, and on what?
Do you hold professional liability insurance?
4. RED FLAGS
A promised connection date or power level: these decisions belong to RTE and Enedis. A commission on land or equipment. A vague deliverable. A team you are never introduced to.
5. WHERE GRIDREADINESS FITS
GridReadiness is a data center consulting and owner's representative firm in France, from site to commissioning, specialised in power and grid connection. We do not design the facility or carry out the works: we steer, check and coordinate on the client's behalf, alongside engineering firms. No commissions, best-efforts obligation. If another type of firm fits your need better, we will say so. See engineering firm or advisor: who does what.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between an engineering firm and an owner's representative?
The engineering firm designs the facility and often supervises the works. The owner's representative works for the owner: it defines the need, selects and steers the parties and checks what they deliver.
Who should I consult first about land in France?
An advisor who can tell which grid power is accessible and when, since this usually decides a French site's value and timeline.
