THREE TRACKS OF AI DATA CENTER POWER SOURCING

Power Sourcing — Parallel Tracks
Track 1 — Grid connection: RTE application, study, approval, works (18–36 months brownfield)
Track 2 — Transformer procurement: manufacturer selection, specification, order, delivery (20–32 months EU second-tier)
Track 3 — Power purchase agreement: nuclear PPA or grid tariff (ARENH, wholesale) (3–6 months)
Critical path: transformer procurement and grid connection run in parallel — both must complete before commissioning

TRANSFORMER PROCUREMENT FOR AI

Transformer procurement is the single longest lead-time element of AI data center power sourcing. At US OEMs (ABB, Siemens, Hitachi), lead times have reached 48-60 months. EU second-tier manufacturers (Efacec, Pauwels, TMC) remain at 20-32 months for standard specifications — and can produce ANSI/IEEE-compliant 60Hz units for US projects.

NUCLEAR PPA IN FRANCE

France's nuclear fleet generates approximately 400 TWh/year at €50-70/MWh baseload. Large AI data centers (100MW+) can negotiate direct nuclear power purchase agreements — either through EDF's ARENH mechanism or direct bilateral PPAs with nuclear operators. Meta signed a 20-year, 1.1 GW nuclear PPA in the US (Constellation) in 2025 — the French equivalent is available at better pricing.
