Texas built its reputation as the fastest place in the US to get a data center connected to the grid. That reputation just collided with the scale of what's actually been requested — and in August 2026, the state hit pause.

THE SCALE OF THE ERCOT QUEUE

To put that in perspective: the new applications ERCOT received in a single quarter of 2026 were roughly equal to the grid operator's entire current peak load. That's the scale mismatch that led to the August pause.
THE AUGUST 2026 PAUSE
On August 3, 2026, Texas Governor Greg Abbott halted all new data center grid connection approvals pending a comprehensive audit by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and ERCOT. Projects must now disclose ownership structure, financial commitments, water use, and community impact before proceeding — a materially higher bar than the streamlined process Texas was previously known for.
Before the pause, ERCOT had approved a "Batch Zero" framework in June 2026 to group large-load projects of 75+ MW into coordinated study batches, with roughly 205 GW of large load eligible under that framework. Whether that framework survives the audit process in its current form is, as of this writing, an open question developers should track directly rather than assume.
WHAT STILL WORKS: THE FAST-TRACK THRESHOLD
ERCOT's fast-track option for projects under 20 MW has not been affected by the pause in the same way — it remains the fastest interconnection path in ERCOT territory for smaller loads. For projects above that threshold, ERCOT was processing 100+ MW loads roughly 33% faster than PJM before the pause, though that comparison is now less meaningful given the current review freeze.
THE BEHIND-THE-METER ALTERNATIVE — AND ITS OWN LIMITS
Behind-the-meter generation (on-site natural gas or solar) can reduce or eliminate the need to wait in ERCOT's queue entirely, which is part of why Texas has attracted so much of the self-generation-focused data center development happening in the US. But this path isn't free of its own bottleneck: gas turbine and generator lead times are running into multi-year OEM backlogs regardless of which grid queue a project is trying to avoid — a self-generation strategy shifts the constraint from the interconnection queue to the equipment order book, it doesn't remove it.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR PROJECT PLANNING
Any project that was counting on ERCOT's historical speed advantage needs to reassess that assumption against the current audit and disclosure requirements, not the pre-August process. The underlying equipment constraints — transformers, generators, turbines — apply in Texas exactly as they do everywhere else this site tracks, regardless of how the interconnection process itself evolves.
